One of my favorite characters Neelan joins Kabilar and leads him to Paari. Neelan questioning Kabilar like a kid and his ignorance about poets and words is hysterical. Paari meeting Kabilar for the first time and deciding to carry Kabilar on As an avid reader of Tamil historical novels, I always had Ponniyin Selvan as the benchmark. Paari meeting Kabilar for the first time and deciding to carry Kabilar on his shoulders is one of many goosebump moments in the novel. I have heard people address lean kids as Dhevangu.

Not even in my dreams did I imagine this animal would have so much history that can bring a war. The novel travels thru the world of various plants, flowers and animals. The author scores by explaining the significance of each plant and animals to this novel.

This novel rich in Tamil history, ends in a war between Paari and Moovendhar. The war is basically between people who believe in equality and Virtue and people who want to destroy it.

Almost pages of war sequence gives us precise and in-depth detail of planning and execution. Special kudos to Su Venkatesan for writing such a culturally rich novel. Equal appreciation to Manian Selvam as well for all those pictures. Never a dull moment in this pages novel. Amazing narration!!!! View 1 comment. Mar 26, Sathya Narayanan rated it it was amazing. Amazing book by Mr S. Yesterday I completed the book. Unable to recover from the story. This is an epic story.

So much of knowledge about our ancient Tamil legends. I couldn't able to understand the effort spent by Mr Venkatesan in creating this story. Thanks again for creating this beautiful Velpari. Jun 10, Hamid Shah rated it really liked it.

After a long time, Su. Venkatesan's Velpaari kindled my interest in reading a Tamil Historical Fiction. The author builds the world of the Parambu Tribe in the first part and it shows the extensive research on his part. The author has brilliantly linked the story of Lord Murugan within this and I really liked his take on him.

Apart from this, the second part deals with the author's effort to make the King Paari even more larger than life picture which he was already in Tamil's people mind.

Some of the war tactics, war heroism were overboard but it's historical fiction -why should we put a break to author's imagination. Anyways, its a fantastic read and I have enjoyed his previous book as well - Kaaval Kottam.

Good to see a new book on this genre and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Jan 06, Manimaranselvam rated it it was amazing. Excellent work by Su. Feb 20, Venkat Ram rated it liked it. Much awaited book. But not as expected Too much off branch stories deviating from main story line. Sometimes felt bored. Sketches in the book was awesome. May 27, Raja rated it it was amazing. Writer Su. Venkatesan weaves an amazing web reimagining the life of Paari - a chieftain of around villages in the Western Ghats of modern Tamil Nadu.

Sangam literature, has left a few, vivid, and tantalizing clues about Paari, and these clues have survived in the imagination of Tamil people for over two millenia. The poetry of Sangam, has two major threads. First, it celebrates nature with evocative descriptions of animals, plants, the landscape etc. Second, it speaks of a code of ethics to live by in love and war, that is based on nature. The story is set in the period of transformation when the three great empires of the South - Cheras, Cholas, and Pandyas - are being established by bringing numerous chieftains under their control.

The kings and their ministers, see this as an inevitable force of change, and in Paari's world view, humans are just a part of nature, just as animals, birds, or plants, and refuses to budge. Ve, brings the land of Parambu to life with intricate descriptions of the landscape, the animals, the plants, and more importantly the people of Parambu.

Through Paari, Su. Ve, skillfully portrays a colorful picture of a life of a Sangam cheiftain, who lives the ideals and values portrayed in Sangam poetry. A thoughtful, insightful leader who has a keen sense of appreciation of every living, and non-living thing in his land. In one instance, when Paari, meets an older lady - who has travelled far at a ripe old age for a function, he inquires how the tree on her backyard is doing, and throughout the book, the incredible research done by Su.

Ve, in writing this book shines through. When the three kingdoms join their forces to conquer the small land of Parambu, they face a determined force of Paari with their knowledge of the terrain, and their incredible valour. By pointing to the value system of Paari, Su. Ve, skillfully reminds us what we have lost. From a purely literary point of view, this is probably the best Tamil novel, since the glory days of Tamil Selvan - that has reached hundreds of thousands Tamil readers, in recent memory.

While some may argue the literary merit of this work, for its cinematic descriptions of the war, the descriptions of the character portrayals, or the war, is no different than the celebrated work of Llosa - in which he attempted to recreate the War of Canudos.

The caliber of research into the period, deep understanding of the Sangam literature, and Su. Ve's unpretentious writing, all makes this novel a compelling read. The beautiful illustrations by Se. Manian, makes reading the novel all the more pleasurable.

Let's hope more such novels come in the future. Dec 16, Aarthi rated it it was amazing. That it did not, is an understatement. It struck all the right chords, broadened my horizon and made me hungry for more Tamil literature. Meeting and interacting with him was such an inspiration to me as a reader and an aspiring author. This is his second novel that was published as a weekly series in Ananda Vikatan and later turned into book editions.

When asked if the book will be translated into English which is an immense ask , he said it is a possibility being explored and the right kind of team should come together. He also humored me to suggest a good translator. To hear from the author himself, the way he has spun the story from long lost history was a revelation.

This will be one of the books that I will carefully hand over to my children. If you have parents who can read Tamil, please gift it to them. For once, Google is starved for information on this book. But as a reader I can vouch for it and so will the massive fan base. The mix-up is understandable but an epic confusion for folks looking it up. Jun 26, Sara Banu rated it it was amazing. We all studied from our childhood But, in this novel, author made it clear, its not only the king, who will give their chariot to plants, but the entire kingdom, will give anything for cause This novel is the bright side of Tamil history, which was being ignored.

Though We all studied from our childhood Though it contains fictious elements, still carries the repository of ancient knowledge and culture Its always been showcased that, the big kingdoms are protectors and they are the ones who possess civilization, culture and all Even in our contemporary times But, its not true Its been lost time to time, when one gets powerful This novel tells us,how the people who belongs to nature, lives with nature were being tested by the greediness, power, trade
